Correspondence of the Baldwin family of Canterbury, Connecticut. Primarily contains the correspondence of doctors Elijah Baldwin and his son, Elijah Baldwin, Jr. Many of the letters were written while Elijah Baldwin, Jr. attended Yale College. Notable correspondents to Elijah Baldwin, Sr. include Prudence Crandall Philleo, William A. Buckingham, Governor of Connecticut, and John H. Brockway, Connecticut Congressman. Contains correspondence related to Elijah Baldwin, Sr.'s work with the mentally insane. Also includes correspondence of Elijah Baldwin, Sr.'s wife, Hannah Baldwin, and that of his daughters, Esther Baldwin, Amy Baldwin, and Hannah Baldwin Bishop. Contains correspondence of Elijah Baldwin, Sr.'s wife, Sarah Harris Mathewson Baldwin. Contains papers pertaining to Elijah Baldwin, Sr.'s father, Captain David Baldwin, including tax records, estate and probate papers, and some correspondence. Includes bills and receipts, land records, and some town records of Canterbury, Connecticut relating to the town selectmen, the school, the building of a church, and the construction of a turnpike. Also contains some materials relating to Festus Baldwin.
